Magnetic field evolution in Bok globules

چکیده

Using the Submillimeter Common-User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT), we obtained submillimeter polarization maps of the Bok globules B 335, CB 230, and CB 244 at 850 μm. We find strongly aligned polarization vectors in the case of B 335 and CB 230, indicating a strong coupling of the magnetic field to the dust grains. Based on the distribution of the orientation and strength of the linear polarization we derive the magnetic field strengths in the envelopes of the globules: 134μG (B335), 218μG (CB230), and 257μG (CB244). In agreement with previous submillimeter polarization measurements of Bok globules we find polarization degrees of several percent decreasing towards the centers of the cores. Furthermore, we compare the magnetic field topology with the spatial structure of the globules, in particular with the orientation of the outflows and the orientation of the nonspherical globule cores. In case of the globules B 335 and CB 230, the outflows are oriented almost perpendicular to the symmetry axis of the globule cores. The magnetic field, however, is aligned with the symmetry axis of the prolate cores in the case of the Bok globules B 335 and CB 230, while it is slightly aligned with the outflow axis in the case of the Bok globules CB 26 and CB 54. We discuss the possibility that the different orientations of the magnetic field relative to the outflow directions reflect different evolutionary stages of the single globules. Evolution of Magnetic fields in Bok globules?

We study the influence and structure of the magnetic field in the early phases of low-mass star formation using polarization maps of Bok globules at a wavelength of 850 μm, obtained with the Submillimeter Common-User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). We discuss observations of the following sources: CB 26 a small globule with a nearly dispersed dense core and ...

Millimetre dust emission from northern Bok globules

We present the results of a 1.3mm continuum study of 59 Bok globules located north of−30◦ declination. The catalogue of Clemens & Barvainis (1988) served as a search list for the target objects investigated here. Based on the analysis of the IRAS point source colour-colour diagram, four distinct groups of globules are distinguished. It is shown that indeed each of these groups has distinctive p...

Optical and submillimetre observations of Bok globules – tracing the magnetic field from low to high density

We present optical and submillimetre polarimetry data of the Bok globule CB3. We also present optical polarimetry and submillimetre continuum data of the Bok globule CB246. We use each set of polarimetry data to infer the magnetic field orientation in each of the clouds. The optical data can only trace the field orientation in the low density edge regions of clouds, because if the extinction is...

Bok Globules in the Lmc

We report the discovery of small, isolated dust clouds in the Large Magellanic Cloud, which are excellent candidates for counterparts to the Bok globules observed in the Galaxy. We detect these small clouds silhouetted against diffuse Hα emission, based on parallel imaging with the WFPC-2 on HST. The clouds we identify as Bok globule candidates have typical sizes of approximately 1 ′′ , corresp...

Star Formation in Bok Globules and Small Clouds

While most star formation occurs in giant molecular clouds, numerous small clouds and Bok globules are known to each harbor one or a few young stars. Studies of such isolated newborn stars offer insights into the star formation process unencumbered by the confusion that often complicates studies of richer star forming regions. In this chapter, a dozen Bok globules and small clouds have been sel...
